How we teach

What Sine teaches, and how.

Teaching logic

Driving, not a memorised route

The test is one check that you are ready to use the road. We spend lesson time on give-way, roundabout observation, speed choice and defensive driving.

If the examiner changes the route, or something unexpected happens, you still have a way to decide. We practise the standard on real streets around your test centre — not a fixed turn-by-turn path to recite.

Teaching manner

A calm car

Anxiety makes learning slower. Instructors keep a steady manner: why a step is done that way, and what the risk is if it is skipped.

No rushing from the passenger seat, and no raised volume. Beginners stay on quiet streets until control is stable. If you are not test-ready, we say so rather than filling a diary.

Between lessons

Hands on the road, rules between lessons

The hour in the car is for coordination and muscle memory. Between lessons, current students can use SafeInNZ at no extra charge.

Road Code review, wrong-question practice, scenario items and notes on local test-area risks. SafeInNZ is a study aid, not an NZTA website, and not a route to memorise.

Instructors

Every instructor who teaches for Sine holds the NZTA Instructor (I) endorsement. Henry and Lynn both teach in Mandarin and English, automatic and manual. Say when you book whether you would rather a male or female instructor — we will try, though diaries are often full and we cannot promise a match.

Chief instructor / NZTA I-Endorsement instructor

Henry · 牛教练

Background
NZTA Instructor (I) endorsement holder with on-road teaching experience in Auckland. Master’s degree in physics; previously a physics and mathematics teacher.
Teaching style
Turns vague “road sense” into cause and effect: what to look at, who to give way to, and how speed and following distance sit in physical space. Steady speech. A quiet car.
Often a good fit for
Complete beginners, nervous first-timers, manual clutch and car control, and drivers who need to unlearn overseas habits.
Languages and cars
Mandarin / English. Automatic / manual.

NZTA I-Endorsement instructor

Lynn · 童教练

Background
NZTA Instructor (I) endorsement holder with on-road teaching experience around Auckland.
Teaching style
Detailed, patient guidance. A measured pace that suits students who feel anxious and want confidence without being hurried.
Often a good fit for
First lessons, hill starts, tight suburban streets, manual clutch work, and overseas drivers who need everyday Auckland road practice.
Languages and cars
Mandarin / English. Automatic / manual.

Courses

Start with the stage you are actually in. For most students, we recommend one lesson first, then plan the next step from what we actually see.

Learner / first lessons

Beginner driving

Get the car under control before you join busy traffic. For people who have never held a steering wheel, have just received a Learner licence, or feel acute anxiety in the driver’s seat.

For a complete beginner, the first hour is a teaching lesson with an initial assessment built in — not a pass/fail test. We look at comfort, control and observation while teaching the basics, then suggest what to practise next. Manual clutch is taught without a stopwatch.

VTNZ marking standard

Restricted & Full test prep

Structured practice against the VTNZ marking standard. For drivers with basic car control preparing for a Restricted test or, under the current NZ graduated system, a Full practical test before 25 January 2027.

Mock tests are charged as a normal hour. Test-day accompaniment is priced separately. If you want the school car on test day, we need a prior lesson in that car so we know it is safe to take to VTNZ. From 25 January 2027, NZ drivers progressing from Restricted to Full no longer sit a Full practical test.

Priority rules, not first pedals

Overseas licence conversion

The work is NZ priority habits — not teaching you to start a car. For drivers converting an overseas licence where a practical test is required, including drivers from non-exempt countries such as mainland China, or experienced drivers who want to adapt to Auckland roads.

We will not restart you on pedals unless control is actually unsafe. Most conversion time is give-way, roundabouts, motorway joins and observation. The 25 January 2027 removal of the NZ graduated-system Full practical test does not remove overseas conversion testing: licences from non-exempt countries, including mainland China, still require the applicable theory and practical tests.

Pricing & terms

Published hourly rates. We usually recommend starting with one lesson, then planning the next step from what we actually see. Hours are Monday–Sunday, 8:00–16:00; ask us about other times.

Lesson in your car
$75 / hour

For lessons in your own car, Sine requires a current WoF, current registration and active vehicle insurance. The passenger seat also needs a usable lever-type handbrake so the instructor can assist if needed.

Lesson in the school car
$85 / hour

Dual-control Suzuki Swift with commercial instruction insurance. Automatic and manual available.

Full mock test
Same hourly rate

Charged as a standard one-hour lesson, including a scored mock and a detailed debrief.

Full / overseas-conversion practical test accompaniment
$75 own car / $85 school car

Per test. For the current Full practical test or an overseas-conversion practical test, where applicable.

Restricted test accompaniment
$100 own car / $120 school car

Per test. Includes the instructor accompanying you on Restricted test day.

If the accompaniment uses a school car, we need a prior on-road assessment in that car. We will not take an unfamiliar driver to VTNZ in a dual-control vehicle.

Prices are in New Zealand dollars. Lessons are paid when the session finishes. After the first lesson, the instructor can suggest what to practise next; continue only as needed.

Where we teach

We mainly teach on the North Shore and in West Auckland. Central and East Auckland can be arranged, including practice around Mount Wellington and Glen Innes. Meeting near a test centre or a quiet street is usual.

If you want a pick-up, travel time is counted inside that lesson hour.

Albany · Saturn Place (VTNZ North Harbour)

Address: 3–5 Saturn Place, Rosedale, Albany 0632

What the roads are like: Industrial parks mixed with commercial streets, 50 km/h on Albany Highway, and motorway on/off ramps. Speed control and give-way at junctions matter here.

Glenfield · North Shore (VTNZ North Shore)

Address: 120 Sunnybrae Road, Glenfield 0627

What the roads are like: Hilly residential streets and school zones, with frequent roundabouts and merge lanes. Hill starts, smooth braking and lane choice come up often. This is a common area for practical-test preparation.

Silverdale (VTNZ Silverdale)

Address: 5 Furnace Place, Silverdale 0932

What the roads are like: Wider roads, multi-lane arterials and large roundabouts. The test tends to look at mid-to-high speed stability and following distance.

Westgate (VTNZ Westgate)

Address: 2–6 Pinot Lane, Westgate 0614

What the roads are like: Busy arterials near motorway entries and a large retail area. Lane changes, roundabout entries/exits and decisive merges in dense traffic are the usual pressure points.

New Lynn (VTNZ New Lynn)

Address: 46 Portage Road, New Lynn 0600

What the roads are like: Older suburban streets, tight lanes, dense kerbside parking, bus lanes and pedestrian crossings. Forward scanning and legal use of flush medians matter more than speed.

Mount Wellington (VTNZ Mount Wellington)

Address: C4/4 Pacific Rise, Mount Wellington 1060

What the roads are like: Industrial and retail streets near SH1, with busy arterials around Sylvia Park. Lane changes, following distance and give-way in dense traffic come up often. This is a common area for practical-test preparation.

Glen Innes (VTNZ Glen Innes)

Address: 139 Apirana Avenue, Glen Innes 1072

What the roads are like: East Auckland mix of arterials and residential streets: Apirana Avenue, roundabouts, school zones and tighter 30 km/h stretches. Observation and give-way at side roads matter more than speed. This is a common area for practical-test preparation.

SafeInNZ between lessons

SafeInNZ is Sine’s own study system. It is free for current students.

Use the hour in the car for hands and eyes. Use SafeInNZ for the rules:

  • Full Road Code question bank, Chinese/English, with wrong-answer review — useful before the Learner theory test.
  • Scenario items on give-way, roundabout entry, and speed signs — the scenes that cost marks.
  • Notes on common risk points around Albany, Glenfield, Westgate and similar areas.
  • AI theory tutor for rule detail and priority disputes.
  • Supervised-practice logbook for Learner hours with a supervisor.

SafeInNZ is a study aid, not an NZTA website. Marked roads are for reference. Do not treat them as a fixed navigation path to memorise.
