Questions before you book

Hours, own-car rules, test-day hire, cancellation, language, and how lessons are structured.

It depends on spatial judgement, coordination, and how much supervised practice you do between lessons. Students starting from zero with no extra practice often need about 15–20 hours of professional instruction, while regular supervised practice can reduce that. We usually recommend starting with one hour. For a complete beginner, that first hour is a normal teaching lesson with an initial assessment built in, not a pass/fail test. Afterward, the instructor can give a more realistic plan.

Yes. Own-car lessons are $75 per hour. For Sine lessons, we require the car to have a current WoF, current registration, active vehicle insurance, sound condition, and a conventional lever handbrake the instructor can use from the passenger seat. If you have never driven, the first stage is usually safer in the school car, which has dual foot brakes.

Yes, as test-day accompaniment. Restricted is $100 in your car / $120 in the school car. The current Full practical test, and an overseas-conversion practical test where applicable, are $75 / $85. Agree the centre and time in advance. If you want the school car, we need a prior lesson in that car so we know it is safe to take to VTNZ.

For drivers progressing through New Zealand’s graduated Class 1 licensing system, the Full practical test is removed from 25 January 2027. Overseas licence conversion is a separate process. If your overseas licence is from a non-exempt country, including mainland China, NZTA still requires the applicable theory and practical tests. Exempt-country conversions follow different requirements.

We usually recommend starting with one lesson. That gives you a chance to see whether the teaching style and car suit you, and gives the instructor enough real driving to identify priorities. After the lesson, we can suggest what to practise with an instructor, what you can practise privately, and when to move to the next stage. You decide what to book after that.

Practical-test instructions are given in English. The language is usually short — left, right, pull over, and similar. Lessons can be in Mandarin, English, or both, and we practise common examiner phrases. If English is a genuine barrier, NZTA allows an interpreter to be arranged under its current requirements; confirm the current interpreter requirements with NZTA or the testing agent when you book.

Please give at least 24 hours’ notice by WeChat, WhatsApp or phone. The instructor’s diary is already held for you. Cancellations, changes or no-shows inside 24 hours are charged at the full lesson price.

Yes. Lessons can be in Mandarin, English, or a mix. Say which you prefer when you book. The school is open to every student; bilingual teaching is a service, not a closed community.

Yes. Lynn (童教练) holds the NZTA Instructor (I) endorsement and teaches Mandarin and English, automatic and manual. Henry is the chief instructor. Say when you book whether you would rather a male or female instructor. We will try; both diaries are often full, so a preference is not a guarantee.

Henry is the chief instructor and holds the NZTA Instructor (I) endorsement. He has a master’s degree in physics and previously taught physics and mathematics. He teaches Mandarin and English, automatic and manual. His teaching style focuses on calm, cause-and-effect explanations rather than raised volume.

Yes. Every instructor who gives paid driving instruction for Sine holds the NZTA Instructor (I) endorsement for Class 1 instruction.

$75 per hour in your own car, $85 per hour in the school car. Mock tests use the same hourly rate. Restricted accompaniment is $100 in your car / $120 in the school car. The current Full practical test, and an overseas-conversion practical test where applicable, are $75 / $85. If the school car is used for accompaniment, we need a prior assessment lesson in that car. You pay when the lesson finishes, by cash or bank transfer.

Suzuki Swift, with both automatic and manual available to book. School cars have dual controls and commercial instruction insurance. Manual clutch work is taught without rushing the learner.

Monday to Sunday, 08:00–16:00. If you need another slot, message us and we will see what the diary allows. We mainly teach on the North Shore and in West Auckland; Central and East Auckland can be arranged. Meeting near a test centre or a quiet street is usual. If you want a pick-up, travel time is counted inside that lesson hour.

Commonly Albany (Saturn Place / North Harbour), Glenfield (North Shore, including Restricted and Full), Silverdale, Westgate, New Lynn, Mount Wellington (VTNZ Mount Wellington) and Glen Innes. We teach the road, not a memorised route.

SafeInNZ is Sine’s own study platform, free for current students: bilingual Road Code questions, wrong-answer review, scenario items, notes on local test-area risks, an AI theory tutor, and a supervised-practice logbook. It is not an NZTA website. Use it to understand rules, not to memorise a turn-by-turn path.

WhatsApp or WeChat is fastest; the website form also works. Include licence stage (Learner / Restricted / Full / conversion), automatic or manual, own car or school car, preferred language, and the VTNZ centre if you have one. If you would rather Henry or Lynn, say so — we will try, without promising a match.
