Courses

Start with the stage you are actually in. For most students, we recommend one lesson first, then plan the next step from what we actually see.

Learner / first lessons

Beginner driving

Get the car under control before you join busy traffic.

For people who have never held a steering wheel, have just received a Learner licence, or feel acute anxiety in the driver’s seat.

Who it is for:People who have never held a steering wheel, have just received a Learner licence, or feel acute anxiety in the driver’s seat.

What’s covered
  1. 1. Cabin set-up and basic control

Seat and mirrors, ignition, and linear use of accelerator and brake. Automatic lessons build smooth stop–start. Manual lessons work clutch bite and gear logic without rushing.

  2. 2. Low-speed control and observation habits

Quiet-street starts, kerbside parking, Mirror–Indicate–Blind Spot Check, reversing, three-point turns and parallel parking.

  3. 3. Joining real traffic

School zones, hills, traffic-light junctions, then two-way streets, ordinary roundabouts and multi-lane following — only when the previous stage is stable.

Progress follows what you can actually absorb. We do not push a beginner onto a busy test-area road to “get it over with”.

For a complete beginner, the first hour is a teaching lesson with an initial assessment built in — not a pass/fail test. We look at comfort, control and observation while teaching the basics, then suggest what to practise next. Manual clutch is taught without a stopwatch.

  • Cabin and pedal control
  • Quiet-road practice
  • Observation sequence
  • Your actual pace

VTNZ marking standard

Restricted & Full test prep

Structured practice against the VTNZ marking standard.

For drivers with basic car control preparing for a Restricted test or, under the current NZ graduated system, a Full practical test before 25 January 2027.

Who it is for:Drivers with basic car control preparing for a Restricted test or the current NZ Full practical test. Overseas licence conversion is covered separately below.

What’s covered
  1. 1. Full mock test

Run against the NZTA scoring system. Critical errors and immediate-fail errors are identified, then unpacked after the drive.

  2. 2. High-cost scenes

Lane choice and signalling on complex roundabouts, using the acceleration lane to build speed and safely match motorway traffic, legal use of a flush median, and complete blind-spot checks.

  3. 3. Roads around the test centre

Practice around Albany, Glenfield, Silverdale, Westgate, New Lynn, Mount Wellington and Glen Innes so the local pattern is familiar: narrow residential streets, hidden side roads, changing speed limits. The aim is to drive by the signs, not by a memorised path.

We teach the standard. You decide when you are ready to book the test.

Mock tests are charged as a normal hour. Test-day accompaniment is priced separately. If you want the school car on test day, we need a prior lesson in that car so we know it is safe to take to VTNZ. From 25 January 2027, NZ drivers progressing from Restricted to Full no longer sit a Full practical test.

  • Mock test + debrief
  • Critical / immediate-fail errors
  • Motorway merge & roundabouts
  • Test-area roads

Priority rules, not first pedals

Overseas licence conversion

The work is NZ priority habits — not teaching you to start a car.

For drivers converting an overseas licence where a practical test is required, including drivers from non-exempt countries such as mainland China, or experienced drivers who want to adapt to Auckland roads.

Who it is for:Drivers converting a non-exempt overseas licence, including mainland China, who need the required NZ practical test; or experienced overseas drivers who want to adapt to Auckland road rules.

What’s covered
  1. 1. Give-way and roundabouts

We assume you can already control the car. Lesson time goes to NZ priority: give-way, entering and leaving roundabouts, leaving a side road, motorway join and lane change.

  2. 2. Habit correction

Common imported habits — hugging the centre line, cutting corners, hovering over the stop line at lights — are corrected on real roads.

  3. 3. Hazard identification

Where it forms part of the practical test, spoken hazard identification is practised in the way an examiner may sample it.

You already drive. We adjust the rules of this country, then put them on Auckland roads.

We will not restart you on pedals unless control is actually unsafe. Most conversion time is give-way, roundabouts, motorway joins and observation. The 25 January 2027 removal of the NZ graduated-system Full practical test does not remove overseas conversion testing: licences from non-exempt countries, including mainland China, still require the applicable theory and practical tests.

  • NZ give-way logic
  • Roundabouts and merges
  • Habit correction
  • Hazard identification

SafeInNZ between lessons

SafeInNZ is Sine’s own study system. It is free for current students.

SafeInNZ is a study aid, not an NZTA website. Marked roads are for reference. Do not treat them as a fixed navigation path to memorise.
